A well-stocked first aid kit is one of the most frequently used items in any home emergency supply — often long before a large-scale disaster ever occurs. This guide covers general essentials; it is not medical advice.
A solid kit includes adhesive bandages in various sizes, sterile gauze pads and rolls, medical tape, antiseptic wipes or solution, tweezers, scissors, a digital thermometer, disposable gloves, and an instant cold pack.
Include basic over-the-counter pain relievers, antihistamines, and anti-diarrheal medication, plus a several-day supply of any personal prescription medications, clearly labeled.
For more serious situations, consider adding trauma supplies such as a compression bandage and burn gel. These items are commonly recommended in general emergency-preparedness checklists, but proper use in a real trauma situation should follow first aid training.
Supplies are only half the equation. A basic first aid and CPR course from a recognized training provider builds the skills to use them effectively. We link to general first aid training resources in our guides where relevant.
A home first aid kit is for minor injuries and stabilizing more serious ones until help arrives. For any serious injury, call your local emergency number immediately. This guide is general information only, not medical advice.
